Toxics Policy: A Step Forward
The NYS Assembly announced today that it has advanced a package to “Preserve And Protect The Environment“. This package includes the following bills, which will pave the way for greater regulation of toxic chemicals in the household, workplace and community.
- Prohibit the sale of any toy, child care product or beverage container containing bisphenol-A in products intended for children under three years of age (A.6919-B/Englebright).
- Establish the New York State Healthy and Green Procurement Act to ensure that state agencies purchase environmentally-friendly products (A.7038/Sweeney).
- Ban the use of the chemical flame retardant Decabromodiphenyl (DecaBDE) in electronics, textiles and mattresses (A.7573/Sweeney).
- Provide for the phase-out of pesticides on state property. The measure would discontinue the use of pesticides by the state and adopt a pest control policy that substantially relies on non-chemical pest control policies (A.5848/Brodsky).
